When officials representing the San Diego Chargers NFL football team went before the California Coastal Commission late last week and proposed a joint-use, stadium-convention center project in downtown San Diego’s East Village, they likely thought it was the perfect solution to much-needed additional convention space in the area.

By all indications, meetings organized by global trade associations continue to see positive growth, according to 92 respondents who took part in theInternational Congress and Convention Association’s and IMEX Group’s latest survey.
Seventy-seven percent of the respondents who took part in the joint annual survey, conducted during the IMEX event’s Association Day in Frankfurt, Germany, organize meetings with more than 500 attendees and 17 percent organize meetings with 5,000-plus attendees.

Mirroring the continued growth in the overall trade show industry, several recent shows saw positive showfloor size, exhibitor and attendee numbers.
Messe Frankfurt’s Texworld USA, for example, saw tremendous growth, with 438 exhibitors from 15 countries, a 33.5 percent increase from the July 2012 show.
For the fourth time, Texworld was collocated the International Apparel Sourcing Show and the Home Textiles Sourcing Expo, which drew in a total of 731 exhibitors and 5,292 attendees.

Atlanta-based Urban Expositions has further expanded into the restaurant and foodservice industries by scooping up three shows from Reed Exhibitions and one more from the New York State Restaurant Association.
