In Houston, they decided that one entity was better than two for promoting the city as a go-to convention and tourism destination. The boards of Houston First Corporation and the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau have agreed to align themselves structurally. As part of the alignment, the GHCVB’s 90-person staff will become employees of HFC, with no plans to lay off staff from either organization, according to HFC officials. Since Reed Travel Exhibitions’ AIBTM launched a few years ago in Baltimore, its model has been to have a showfoor filled with suppliers who wanted to show off what they had to offer to buyers who were hosted by the show to come into town. Two good pieces of news came out of San Jose, Calif., last week, with Team San Jose, an economic development organization that also serves as the city’s convention and visitors bureau, being reupped to continue to oversee both the CVB and San Jose McEnery Convention Center. A few years ago, show organizers of SIA Snow Show, owned by the SnowSports Industries America, started tracking independent boutique brands that had either never heard of their show, or were too small to take a booth on the showfloor.
