ASCA Meeting Will Proceed at Hynes Convention Center Despite Twin Bombings Nearby

April 14, 2013

UPDATE, Tuesday Evening: ASCA show site reports "After consultation with Boston officials, we are pleased to report that they recommend that ASCA 2013 proceed as planned. ASCA staff and consultants are in Boston and on-site preparing for your arrival."

Exhibitors for the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association’s annual meeting, scheduled April 17-20, were unable to move in  after two bombs exploded blocks away from the John B. Hynes Convention Center during the Boston Marathon.

Mac Daniel, director of communications and marketing for the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, said the Hynes was evacuated by order of the Boston Police Department after the twin blasts.

Media reports three dead and scores injured.

ASCA officials had posted on their show site following the crisis: “We are closely monitoring the tragic events in Boston and will keep you all apprised as we learn more. It is premature to determine if it will have any impact on ASCA 2013, but be assured that we will rely on the advice and counsel of public safety officials in Boston and that your safety will be our first priority.”

There was ASCA staff already on site for the meeting, but all were reported to be safe, according to organization officials.

Host hotels for the event, including the Marriott, Sheraton and Colonnade hotels are open, while the Lenox hotel, which is closer to the marathon finish line, has been temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution, they added.

“Once we have more information, we will share it with you,” show officials said. “Please keep the victims of this horrible event in your prayers.”
