London-based media group, Reed Elsevier, reported its interim results for the six months ended June 30. The group’s exhibitions organising business, Reed Exhibitions, reported a significant rise in revenues by 32 percent year-on-year reaching £486 million, while the group’s revenue grew by 5 percent to £3.1 billion. Adjusted operating profit of Reed Exhibitions was £151 million, a growth of 34 percent over last year. The subsidiary of Malaysia-based Star Publications, I.Star Ideas Factory, has acquired the business and assets of events organiser CNM Events Marketing for US$14.2 million. As part of the deal, CNM Events will provide a profit before tax guarantee of at least US$9.5 million over three years after the deal is complete. CNM Events’ portfolio of events and exhibitions include The Star Education Fair, The Star Property Fair and CHEER cheerleading competition. Aspire Media, parent company of Interweave, was acquired by F+W Media from private equity firms Frontenac Company and Catalyst Investors and several members of the Interweave management team.   Terms of the deal were not disclosed. With the Outdoor Retailer semiannual trade shows outgrowing their home at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City already an issue, the Outdoor Industry Association, one of the shows’ organizers, also recently expressed its discontent with Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert’s public land policies in the state. OIA’s concerns include the governor’s lawsuit challenging the federal government over jurisdiction of the federal public lands and some road claims within national parks, monuments and wilderness areas that would allow motorized vehicles on dirt trails.… more

The world is about to get a little bit greener with a major commitment by the American Society of Association Executives through a partnership with American Forests to plant one tree per attendee to ASAE’s Annual Meeting & Exposition. The meeting, on tap Aug. 11-14 at the Dallas Convention Center, typically attracts approximately 5,000 attendees. David Dubois, current president and CEO of the Forth Worth (Texas) Convention & Visitors Bureau, has been named the new president of the International Association of Exhibitions & Events.
