Four Live Sessions Set to Debut at American Academy of Dermatology's Annual Meeting in Denver

January 27, 2014

The American  Academy of Dermatology’s 2014 Annual Meeting, on tap March 21-25 in Denver,  will feature four Live Demonstration sessions, including a new live session, “Live Demonstration: Soft Tissue Augmentation and Neuromodulators — Simultaneous Cadaver Prosection and Live Patient Injections”.

The new session, directed by Dr. Susan H. Weinkle, MD, will debut March 21 in the Bellco Theatre.

In this session, described by Dr. Weinkle as “a first-in-class dermatology live injection session demonstrating anatomy and injection technique,” attendees will have the opportunity to see live patient assessment and treatments alongside simultaneous cadaver prosection.

“This course is really one of a kind,” Dr. Weinkle said. “It’s going to allow the attendee to understand the anatomy by seeing a cadaver on one screen, and on the other screen, see the experienced injector injecting the filler and neuromodulators in the face.”

An expert prosector will be guided by an experienced dermatologist to demonstrate the pertinent anatomy. Simultaneously, a live patient will be injected.

“It’s absolutely imperative in this day and age to understand anatomy and what plane you’re injecting,” Dr. Weinkle said.

She added that there have been 50 reported cases of blindness from injections documented in the literature.

“With all the new, longer-lasting fillers, we have to know what we’re doing,” Dr. Weinkle said. “I truly believe that our colleagues will benefit greatly in treating their patients by a thorough understanding of all the anatomical planes, the variations in where the nerves and vessels lie, and how to inject in the most safe, beneficial way for patients.”

In addition to the Academy’s newest Live Demonstration session, there will also be three returning live demonstration sessions: “Live Demonstration: Head & Neck Anatomy - Cadaver Prosection”, “Live Demonstration: The State of the Art of Aesthetic Dermatology” and “Live Demonstration: Advanced Botulinum Toxin.”

The annual meeting attracts close to 20,000 attendees, which includes exhibitor personnel, to a more than 170,000 net square foot showfloor.
