Hurricane Sandy Causes Havoc on East Coast Events Schedule; ISC East Postponed at Javits

As Hurricane Sandy takes aim at the East Coast, potentially impacting a wide swath of the region, shows have been postponed or cancelled altogether at several venues.
New York is predicted to take the brunt of the storm and with mass transit being closed down and low-lying areas of the city evacuated, Reed Exhibitions decided to postpone its ISC East event at the Jacob. K. Javits Convention Center of New York.
“Due to the State of Emergency declared by the Governor of the State of New York and the clear impact and potential danger presented by Hurricane Sandy, we have made a decision to postpone ISC East,” said Ed Several, the show’s manager, on the event Web site.
He added, “We will work with our exhibitors, attendees and the Javits Center to try to establish an appropriate future date for the show.”
Even though ISC East, meant to run Oct. 30-Oct. 31st, decided to postpone, another event taking place in Javits on the same dates - Advanced Energy 2012 Conference – has decided to go ahead with its event.
At the Connecticut Convention Center, two events on the venue’s Web site are cancelled: the Connecticut Educators Computer Association/Connecticut Association of School Librarians 2012 event and a meeting for the Connecticut Housing Coalition.
“It is with regret that the Boards of CECA and CASL have decided that, in the interest of the safety of all involved, that we need to cancel the 2012 CECA/CASL Conference,” said CEA officials on the event’s Web site.
They added, “While we were hopeful that the storm would not impact us, recent weather updates and the Governor's Declaration of Emergency have led us to this decision. Unfortunately, we will be unable to reschedule the conference.”
In Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the International Congress of Esthetics and Spa, Philadelphia was open on Sunday as planned.
“However, due to Hurricane Sandy, the conference will be closed on Monday, Oct. 29,” according to the show’s Web site.
At the Baltimore (Md.) Convention Center, the Baltimore National College Fair, scheduled Oct. 29-Oct. 30, also has been postponed.
“After careful consideration and discussion with our liability insurance carrier and the management at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Md., National College Fair, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29 and 30, will be postponed to a later date due to predicted outages and flooding from Hurricane Sandy,” said National College Association Admission Counseling officials.
At the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s annual meeting is on tap Oct. 30-Nov. 2.
For now, the event is going forward, but meeting organizers said, “We are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast in Boston … Your safety is our No. 1 priority, and we will keep you updated with any changes."
