July 18, 2012

Toronto is host for the American Head and Neck Society’s International Conference for the second time July 21-25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The event will attract nearly 2,000 international surgeons, oncologists, scientists and allied health professionals treating head and neck cancer.

"The International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer has been the world's pre-eminent meeting for head and neck cancer since its inception in 1984. This year, both our content and our delegates are very international, as is our host city," said Jeffrey N. Myers, MD, PhD and AHNS Conference Chair.

He added, "We are excited to provide our participants with many fruitful educational interactions within and between specialties, complemented by the many amenities and experiences Toronto has to offer."

The theme of this year's AHNS International Conference is Bridging the Gap: Caring for the Head and Neck Cancer Patient.

The event program will cover a wide range of topics including breakthroughs in treatment options and surgical technology, the latest research on the causes of head and neck cancer, the vital role of allied health professionals and head and neck cancer in the developing world.

Here are some of the keynote presentations that will be given:

-  “Prevention of Cancers Caused by Infections”

-  “Health Care in the New World: Quality as a Core Business Strategy”

- “Cancer Metabolism Back to the Future”

New in 2012, the conference organizers also have launched a mobile app; an all-in-one guide to the event, offering participants functions such as the ability to create their schedules in advance and e-mail themselves session notes.

"Toronto is the only city outside of the United States in which the AHNS has chosen to host its International Conference to date," said Barry Smith, president and CEO of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

He added, "They were here in 1996 and we are excited to host them again. Not only will this conference assemble a group of renowned head and neck cancer experts in our city, the impact of their spending will be over $5 million, greatly benefitting our local economy."
