TCEB Pushes MICE in Phuket
The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and the province of Phuket hosted the first in the seminar series “Phuket – Towards Sustainable MICE City” to help promote the south-western coastal destination as a MICE hub.
More than 100 delegates from the public and private sectors in Phuket and neighbouring provinces attended the seminar themed “Charming Andaman”, where TCEB highlighted Phuket’s six major attributes: 1) Adventure activities, 2) History and culture, 3) Experience and knowledge, 4) Green travelling and sustainable meeting, 5) Corporate social responsibility, and 6) Luxury travel destination.
Supawan Teerarat, TCEB’s Exhibition Director, said, “Phuket is one of the four active MICE cities in Thailand. Phuket and TCEB signed an MoU in 2009 to develop the province into a MICE City. Phuket possesses potential strengths to become a successful MICE City ... In 2012, Phuket’s MICE industry value is as high as US$163 million, which is second to Bangkok. Out of this, US$160 million is contributed by international MICE activities and the remaining US$3 million is from domestic MICE activities. In terms of number of events, Phuket hosted 788 events last year, which attracted 79,862 visitors, including 59,066 foreign MICE travellers and 20,796 Thai MICE travellers.”
