Macau's MICE Participants Up 26 Percent in 2012
Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DESC) has released its latest data on Macau’s MICE industry for the fourth quarter and the full year of 2012. In the fourth quarter, the number of events rose from 272 in 2011 to 294 in 2012 – an 8.1-percent increase. The number of MICE participants also grew 22 percent rising from 508,125 in 2011 to 621,359 last year.
In particular, there were 19 exhibitions held in the fourth quarter last year compared with 16 in 2011. The number of exhibition participants jumped from 479,825 in 2011 to 586,489 last year – a year-on-year increase of 22%. Meetings held in the quarter increased by 7.4 percent, from 256 in 2011 to 275 in 2012, while the number of participants grew 23 percent from 28,330 to 34,870.
For the full year of 2012, a total of 1,045 MICE events were held, down 2.2 percent from 1,045 in 2011. In contrast, the number of participants recorded a growth of 26 percent to 1,612,961, up from 1,278,054 in the previous year. The number of meetings dropped 3.3 percent to 961 in 2012, while participant numbers increased 11 percent to 123,028. The number of exhibitions held in 2012 was up 20 percent to 61 and attracted 1,489,933 participants.
