2012 International CES Will Be Second Largest in Its History
The Consumer Electronic Association’s 2012 International CES is tapped to be the second largest one in the organization's history, squarely leaving behind any sign of economic doldrums that may have impacted the show’s size in the past few years.
This year’s event, Jan. 10-13 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and other citywide venues, is boasting a 1.851 million net square feet showfloor, as more than 2,700 companies unveil their products across all sectors of the consumer electronics industry.
The largest CES was held in 2008, spanning a record-breaking 1.857 million net sq. ft. of exhibit space.
Last year’s show welcomed 149,529 technology attendees and had more than 1.6 million net sq. ft. of exhibit space, and the 2010 event, which was ranked as the No. 1 show on the TSNN Top 250 Trade Show list, drew 130,000 attendees to a 1.45 million sq. ft. showfloor.
"CES is the global stage for innovation," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA. "Every major technology company across the globe is participating in force at this year's CES.”
He added, “While many exhibit on the showfloor, others send key executives to conduct meetings, participate in keynote panels, or hold their own events in Las Vegas this week to take advantage of the braintrust of technology professionals gathered here."
And, even though Microsoft announced this year would be their last one doing the opening keynote and having a booth on the showfloor, it didn’t put a damper on the line up of companies that are taking part in CES.
In addition to the thousands of exhibitors at this year's show, most major tech companies, including Apple, Facebook, Twitter, HP and Dell, are sending delegations to CES.
More than 20,000 new products also will be shown at the event and will be the “most innovative show on record,” according to CEA officials.
Here is just a small sampling of some of the products that are set to debut on the CES showfloor:
Nokia will debut the Lumia 900 smartphone, a Windows Phone with LTE support, to be sold at AT&T this spring.
OLPC announced the XO 3.0 tablet, a tablet for the world’s poorest children.
SolarFocus' Kindle e-reader case provides 50 hours of onboard reading light powered by a solar panel on the front of the case.
Tobii Technology showed new eye-tracking technology that allows users to scroll, play and navigate using their eyes and without touching a mouse.
