Global Sources bought a 80-percent stake of the China (Shenzhen) International Brand Clothing & Accessories Fair (SZIC), one of Asia’s largest fashion fairs, for US$17.3 million. Shenzhen is a base for garment designing and manufacturing in China and SZIC, which was launched in 2001, has grown since its inception. The 2011 event hosted about 300 exhibitors, 4,000 booths and 31,000 professional visitors. The Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority, which owns Chicago’s McCormick Place and Navy Pier, recently named eight new board members, none of whom directly are in the trade show industry. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel were each allotted four appointments under state law, and the new board appointments will replace the interim board that was in place to oversee changes made to MPEA’s operation of McCormick Place. Australia-based exhibition organiser, Exhibitions and Trade Fairs (ETF), announced the postponement of the company’s special events tradeshow – Melbourne’s Event Showcase (formerly RSVP Melbourne). The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia plans to double the total space rented at trade shows next year by promoting a total of 14 destinations within the country. The ministry will reportedly highlight cities other than the traditional MICE hubs of Jakarta and Bali to promote Indonesia’s overall MICE potential. The Indonesian ministry participates in around 25 trade shows annually and named the cities of Balikpapan, Lombok, Manado, Palembang and Solo as part of an initiative to divert MICE to other parts of the country. London-listed media company, UBM, released its full-year results for the year ended 31st December 2011. UBM’s revenues were up 9.3 percent year-on-year from £889 million to £972 million. Adjusted group operating profits increased 18 percent from £172 million to £202 million. Revenues from the company’s events business, which accounted for more than 40 percent of overall revenue, were up 28% year-on-year at £397 million, compared with last year’s £310 million. The International Roofing Expo recently saw a 3-percent increase in attendees to 8,382 when it ran Feb. 22-24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.   This year’s increase was the second one in a row for the show, which is owned by Hanley Wood Exhibitions and had an 18-percent increase for its 2011 event.   “We are very pleased that the show generated an increase in attendance for the second consecutive year,” said Lindsay Roberts, director of the International Roofing Expo.   She added, "The state-of-the-art products, the cutting-edge… more

Trade association Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute has scored more than 1 million square feet of exhibit space and 1,300 exhibitors and their event still is nine months away. UK-based UBM, through its UBM Asia division, has expanded even further in the Asia-Pacific Region, buying two trade shows and forming a joint venture to develop another one. Also, in the United States, UBM added onto its aviation division with another purchase. The Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International has decided to extend its MEET brand to all of its 2012 events and will kick the series off with HSMAI’s MEET Mid-America April 3-4 at Navy Pier in Chicago.
