Hawaiムi Convention Center Hosts Nine Major Events Ahead of APEC 2011

November 7, 2011

In the year leading up to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2011 Leaders’ Meeting, which  kicks off Nov. 12-13 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center in Honolulu, the venue will have hosted nine major international events.

The nine events collectively drew more than 50,000 attendees, including medical professionals, science and technology experts, environmental policy makers and cultural scholars from more than 100 countries.

“The Hawai‘i Convention Center works proactively with meeting organizers to ensure that they are effectively able to reach global audiences,” said Joe Davis, SMG general manager of the Hawai‘i Convention Center.

He added, “This international participation greatly enhances these meetings and continues to put Hawai‘i at the forefront of discussions that are making a significant impact across a wide range of disciplines.”

Because of Hawai‘i’s geographic position as the central meeting point between North America and Asia the country has seen a significant increase in international participation at events held at the Hawai’i Convention Center.

The center assists U.S. associations in promoting meetings to thousands of participants globally, tapping into growing interest from Korea, China and other areas in the Pacific Rim.

The venue also works with organizations to create multi-language micro-sites, form a network of local ambassadors and promote meetings at various events to increase awareness and interest from global audiences.

Here is a sampling of some of the larger events that have come to the center and attracted large international attendance:

The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) and International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) first joint meeting exceeded previously expected attendance by 1,400 attendees, drawing participants from 65 countries.

The American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) 63rd-annual meeting drew more than a third of all participants attended from 92 countries outside the U.S., and the percentage of international attendees overall was 37 percent.

The American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) 164th-annual meeting attracted more than 39 percent of the meeting’s attendance traveled from 75 countries outside the U.S.

The 19th APEC Leaders’ Meeting, one of the world’s largest intergovernmental meetings and the largest such gathering in Hawai‘i’s history, is another important meeting on tap at the Hawai’i Convention Center that will host 21 member economies.

It is the first time the U.S. has hosted an APEC meeting since 1993.
