HKECIA Comments on the Development of Venues in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) recently released a press release to clarify the position of its members in relation to the plans of the Hong Kong government to add exhibition venue capacity.

In the press release, HKECIA stated, “the Association and its members are keen to see expansion at both of the existing venues (AWE and HKCEC) but do not favour the option of a third venue in the city as this will not solve the problem of trade organisers seeking to hold a large-scale meetings and exhibitions under one roof. Over the past three decades Hong Kong has successfully positioned itself as the trade fair capital of Asia and brought enormous benefits to Hong Kong’s reputation and economy, the HKECIA is resolute not to let this position slip as Hong Kong’s key advantages over other cities in the region remain strong.”

HKECIA stated that its members are keen to review the results of a feasibility study currently being conducted on the use of the land adjacent to the HKCEC, known as the Wan Chai Sports Ground.

The expansion of either of Hong Kong’s existing venues (AsiaWorld-Expo or Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre) has long been a hot and politically-charged topic in Hong Kong.

The building of a new convention centre at the Wan Chai Sports Ground is unlikely to end that debate. At this stage, the size and functionality of a potential new venue in Wan Chai remain unclear.
