New York's Javits Center Reopens; Show Schedule Resumes

October 31, 2012

Update: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg canceled the New York City Marathon on the second day of the 2012 ING New York City Marathon and Fitness Expo.

This time of year, more than 40,000 runners usually converge on the streets of New York City to run the historic marathon and, even after Hurricane Sandy wreaked destruction across the Northeast, this year’s marathon, along with the 2012 ING New York City Marathon and Fitness Expo, still is on tap.

The expo runs Nov. 1-3 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center of New York.

Javits’ officials credited the center’s opening, 24 hours after the hurricane struck, to the operational staff’s quick response to the crisis.

“The ING New York City Marathon has become so much more than a foot race - it is now all about our effort and resolve to support and help the City recover,” said New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg.

She added, “The expo is such a big part of the marathon and runner experience, and this year, is more essential than ever.”

This year, the expo features 165 vendors and exhibitors and will offer athletic footwear and apparel, running accessories, nutritional products, fitness information, health and wellness products and much more.

The event spans more than 158,000 gross square feet of exhibition space and 65,000 runners, family and members of the public are expected to attend during the course of the three days.

In 2011, the New York City Marathon brought in an estimated $340 million in economic impact to the city.

As of now, according to Javits officials, shows scheduled for the week of Nov. 5 are exhibiting as planned; the Customer Engagement Technology World, ad:tech Expo and The International Hotel Motel & Restaurant Show.

Alan Steele, CEO of Javits, told followers earlier this week “@adtech I'm the CEO at Javits. Getting ready for NY Marathon Expo this weekend. We'll be fine for Ad Tech.”

Dmg :: events’ ad:tech Web site also assured attendees that the show will go on as planned Nov. 7-8.

George Little Management’s International Hotel Motel & Restaurant Show also will go on as scheduled, according to the show officials.

“As New York City continues to return to normal post-Sandy, the IHMRS is moving ahead as planned,” show officials said. “Frequent communications with Javits Center officials as well as our various contractors and suppliers have provided us with solid information, making us confident in this decision.”
