Largest Marintec China in 32 Years Wraps Up in Shanghai

December 4, 2011

The biennial Marintec China that was held Nov. 29-Dec. 2 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre had a 40-percent larger showfloor, 70,000 square meters, compared with the 50,000 sq. m.  showfloor at the 2009 event.

The 2011 event, run by UBM Asia and the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, also marked the largest one in Marintec China’s 32-year history.

Also at this year’s event, there were 1,650 exhibiting companies that took part, compared with 1,483 exhibiting companies at the 2009 event, an 11-percent increase.

In addition, there were 18 national and regional group pavilions this year, the same number as 2009, including Denmark, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore and more.

The German pavilion organizer, which has participated in Marintec China for more than

30 years, has been the largest international pavilion for years.

“From the beginning of Marintec China more than 30 years ago, Germany has always presented the largest national group at this leading Asian shipbuilding event.” said Hauke Schlegel, managing director, VDMA, Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries.

He added, “This year, over 100 exhibitors are participating within the impressive German Pavilion, one of the traditional ‘landmarks’ of Marintec China. This strong participation demonstrates how important Marintec China is for the German industry as a business platform in the Asian maritime markets.”

Other exhibiting companies were from Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Greece, Israel, New Zealand, Panama, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

At the same time as the exhibition, the Senior Maritime Forum was held and, according to event organizers, is “one of the most influential and important maritime conferences in Asia.”

The theme of this year’s Forum is: “Green Agenda, Innovation and Development”. The forum will include keynote speeches and presentations on specific areas, such as shipping and port, shipbuilding, ocean engineering, marine finance and marine equipment procurement.

Speakers include senior Chinese government officials and representatives from leading maritime associations and industry professionals.

Marintec China seems poised for even more growth. According to the recently approved “The 12th Five-Year Plan”, Ocean Engineering and Equipment has been highlighted as one of the targeted developments by the Chinese government for the next five years.
