Two Hong Kong Electronics Fairs See Attendee Increases

October 24, 2011

Two Hong Kong-based electronics trade shows organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council- the 31st Hong Kong Electronics Fairs Autumn Edition and the 15th electronicAsia – both had increases in visitor numbers when they were held Oct. 13-16 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Hong Kong Electronics Fairs Autumn Edition had 61,399 attendees, a 6-percent increase, compared with last year’s show, and electronicAsia had 34,23 visitors, a 4-percent increase, compared with last year’s show.

Besides Hong Kong, buyers mainly came from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, the United States, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Germany and India.

With softer markets in the U.S. and Europe, demand for electronics products has shifted to emerging markets, such as South America and Eastern Europe.

To promote the shows, HKTDC organized 130 buying missions that brought in premium buyers from the emerging markets, including Gametec from Russia, the Nikai Group from the United Arab Emirates, Mexbusa from Mexico and the Future Group from India.

“There have been sharp increases in the export of Hong Kong electronic products to emerging markets, particular for the United Arab Emirates, Latin America and India,” said Benjamin Chau, HKTDC executive director.

He added, “In the first eight months of this year, increases in export value of 20 percent to 60 percent have been registered.”

Ibrahim Muslemani, marketing director of Midi Japan from Brazil, came to the shows to source mobile phones, DVD players and GPS systems, among other products.

“I have found many suppliers in the Electronics Fair; the quality is good, the styles are new and many new technological elements have been incorporated into the products,” said Muslemani. “We are going to buy around US$10 million worth of products.”

According to Chau, products that are innovative, mobile communication related, environmentally friendly or focusing on elderly consumers were top sellers.

In October, besides the two electronics fairs, the HKTDC will host the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, as well as Eco Expo Asia Sports Source Asia and the Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair at AsiaWorld-Expo.
