Singapore Records Growth in MICE Arrivals in 2016
According to the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Singapore’s business events sector posted 15% year-on-year growth in 2016.
With more than 410 business events supported by STB in 2016, close to 33,000 visitor arrivals were recorded. This represents a 20% increase compared with 2015. Approximately related revenues of S$611 million (US$430 million) were generated as a result of these visits, representing a year-on-year 28% increase.
STB deputy chief executive, Melissa Ow, stated, “We’ve seen good gains on the business visitor front in 2016, especially business events. The increase in both the number of events and the revenue generated speaks well to the fact that our MICE segment remains competitive and is holding strong.”
Singapore’s pure tourism sector also performed well in 2016. Visitor arrivals were 16.4 million, up by 7.7%, and tourism revenues grew by 13.9%, up to S$24.8 billion (US$17.5 billion). STB attributed this to visitors spending more on food and beverage, shopping and accommodation.
