After more than a decade of small and large businesses being scammed out of millions of dollars when were offered what they thought were free listings in a Fair Guide, the Federal Trade Commission has temporarily halted operations of the Slovakian-based guide’s publisher – Construct Data. More than 20 years ago, 10 for-profit show organizers, including Michael Hough, Peter Nathan and Jason Chudnofsky, to name a few, got together and formed the Society of Independent Show Organizers. This year marked a record for the organization when close to 300 attendees, including sponsors, guests and industry partners, gathered for the SISO CEO Summit April 8-11 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. Until now, there hasn’t been a trade show to serve the explosive growth of the multibillion dollar craft beverage industry. Next year, though, a new event produced by VP International, the Craft Beverage Expo, will launch May 6-8 at the San Jose (Calif.) Timed with the American Society of Association Executive’s annual legislative fly-in for American Associations Day, held March 18-19, the organization gathered letters to deliver to Senate offices opposing a proposed amendment to H.R. 933 that would prohibit federal agencies from sending more than 25 employees to any meeting or conference held in the United States. There’s no question that people love their pets, especially taking into account the record-breaking show numbers that recently were revealed for the American Pet Products Association’s  and the Pet Industry Distributors Association’s Global Pet Expo 2013. The show, held Feb. 20-22 at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, attracted 5,327 buyers, a 5-percent increase, compared with last year.
