Conventions' Inspection Teams Give South Korea's BEXCO Center High Marks

May 9, 2011

It’s a busy time at South Korea’s BEXCO, the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center, with visits by international inspection teams of large conventions that are scheduled to be held there.

The inspection teams consist of not only the working-level staff, but also high-level officials, such as the presidents of world federations and the presidents of the organizing committees.

There are several large convention teams who have had recent site inspections at BEXCO, including the 95th Lions Club International Conference in 2012; the 27th IUSSP International Population Conference in 2013; and the 2014 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference.
Peter McDonald, the president for the 27th IUSSP International Population Conference, visited BEXCO in early February, as well as Nurimaru, and Haeundae.

"The convention infrastructure in Busan is at a world-class level,” McDonald said. He also said he has high expectations that the conference successfully could be hosted following the expansion of BEXCO in 2013.

Later in February, the inspection team for the 95th Lions Club International Conference also visited, including the president of the organizing committee for the international conference, Jung Yeol Choi, as well as about 20 vice-president level guests in Korea.
In addition to the 40,000 Korean attendees, the Lions Club event is expected to attract 20,000 people from 206 countries, with a total of 60,000 attendees.
The next international inspection team planning to visit BEXCO is for the 2014 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference.

With its headquarters in Geneva, the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) is an intergovernmental organization in the telecommunications field and is participated in by governments from around the world. The conference is expected to attract about 2,500 people consisting of governmental representatives, global companies and relevant agencies from 192 countries.

BEXCO predicts a successful uptick in overall conventions and positive evaluations by the international inspection teams provide further emphasis that Busan and BEXCO have the competitiveness to continuously host large international conventions in the future, according to BEXCO officials.

BEXCO already has hosted several top-level events, such as the 2005 APEC Summit, the 2009 OECD World Forum and the 2010 ITS World Congress.
