Penang Hosts 1,251 Events in 2016

According to an industry review released by the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), Penang hosted 1,251 events and generated RM 808 million (US$182 million) in 2016, the first full year of the Penang bureau’s operations.

The PCEB supported 37 international and national business events, featuring an estimated 29,000 participants. The majority of international business events originated from Singapore and South Asia.

In terms of the incentive segment, 82% were domestic groups, while 16% were groups from Singapore. The average number of participants per congress and corporate event was slightly less than 98 participants. This highlights Penang’s strength in the small- and medium-sized event market. 257 events were national congresses focusing on sectors such as education, culture, medical sciences, government services, social sciences and economics.

As event professionals, our job is to host people and while we can’t prepare for everything, it’s essential to develop an emergency plan that can be adapted to any situation. In Boston, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority’s (MCCA) Public Safety Team at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) and the Hynes Convention Center, have taken their experiences to develop a comprehensive crisis management training program, starting with crisis communications.
